POEMS

ODE TO SCULPTORS

In the streets of Florence,
a hammer pounds away,
flecks of marble fall,
a sculptor working hard.
A masterpiece will be made,
if the man is delicate,
and dedicated,
to his painstaking work.
People walk by,
oblivious to the struggle,
as the sculptor's hammer pounds,
at the stubborn stone.
His masterpiece finally done,
he stands back,
looks it over,
shakes his head,
and discards it.

MEDICI GLORY

Cosimo de Medici,
godfather of the Renaissance,
a Florentine legend,
the creator and root of the Renaissance,
is observing the great dome.
Brunelleschi looks on,
as the ruler of Florence,
observes the sturdy bricks.
He is amazed.

Lorenzo de Medici,
Lorenzo the Magnificent,
savior of Florence,
Observes his large financial empire,
banks are established miles away,
and enemies are silenced.

Medici.
The legendary Florentine family,
that shaped and protected the Renaissance,
that saved and ruled Florence,
are,
in short,
GREAT.
